South Africa: General information

South Africa is a multi-ethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages (it has 11 official languages!) and religions with a population of 52 million. Accordingly, traditional clothing found in South Africa is very diverse.

The ten most famous South African tribes are the Ndebele, Pedi, Pondo (Mpondo, Phondo), Sotho, Swazi (Swati), Tsonga (Shangaan), Tswana, Venda, Xhosa, and Zulu. During the 17th century, Dutch colonists from the Netherlands (known as Boers) settled in South Africa. Their descendants have a traditional costume which is like that of 19th century European fashions.
