Source A second-hand shop in Seven Dials (long since lost to the developers) in Southampton, England, UK.

The remains of a red and white label is attached to the lower edge of the outer deel, but no clues are given otherwise to its origins.

Body

The body and limbs are made of padded white cotton. The head appears to be made of clay with fine oriental features and dark painted eyes. There appears to be no hair or if there should be, it is hidden under the hat. This gives the doll almost a babyish appearance

Clothing

The doll is wearing a plain white cotton deel tied with black ties. Interestingly, the black ties have been put on so that the right has to be tied over the left side not the left over the right as is normal with Mongolian deels. Underneath this is a white cotton band acting as underpants.

The thick outer deel is made of light brown brocade, with a broad blue brocade edge along the neck line. The inner lining of the deel is pink cotton. There are black ties attached to the deel but if the left side is placed over the right, the ties do not work as they are attached to both the right and left ends of the front and so cannot close the deel properly. The bottom of the front and back of the deel is curved, though the back is longer than the front.

Around the doll’s neck is a ruff made of stiffened light blue fabric with blanket stitching in red around the neck and the scalloped outer edge.

The hat is a close fitting cap with ears that has a tassel in grey and red wool attached to the left one. The main material is pink with a band of grey around the face and a narrow green band accompanying it. Various flowers and crosses are sewn onto the hat in red and greyish blue and dark blue. The ears are edged in greyish blue blanket stitch. In the centre of the head between the “ears” is a squashed pompom made of red, green and yellow.

Thanks to Attila M., a specialist in Central Asia, I at least can be certain it is a female doll.
